Exhibition, IS QUEER POLITICAL?
As part of the "Is Queer Political" Project
Opening: Fr 23.2.2023, 6pm, QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA
23.2.2024 expected until 10.5.2024 Otto Wagner Areal, ehem. “Direktion”, Stiege 2, Hochparterre, Baumgartner Höhe 1, 1140 Wien Participating artists and performers: AmiRali Bashiri, DJ das_em, Verena Dengler, Oke Fijal, Dejan Klement, Michal Rutz, Qafar Rzayev, Mohsin Shafi, Krishna Shanthi, Damien Thorn, Polina Zaslavskaya The QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA issued its first open call for artistic positions relating to the question “Is Queer Political?”, an inquiry on the societal implications and potential impacts of queer cultural production internationally. The curatorial collective was looking for artistic works that reflect on this question and analyze and criticize patriarchal normativity, hegemonic hierarchies and capitalist structures. The submissions came from very different contexts and showed the understanding of politics as a spectrum, ranging from the governance structures of the nation state all the way to everyday micro-political patterns, embodied experiences and the ways in which desire is regulated. Considering the many backlashes, when it comes to acceptance of queer lives and queer rights worldwide, and the neoliberal structures fueling social differences, it is of the essence to highlight daring art that questions conventional narratives, develops ideas for new utopias and shows transnational solidarity. The exhibition will be opened with speeches followed by performances by Dejan Klement, Michal Rutz, Damien Thorn and a surprise guest. Music by DJ das_em. free entrance “Is Queer Political” takes place within Shift
