QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA, Otto Wagner Areal, C-Gebäude, Baumgartner Höhe 1, 1140 Wien
In June, the QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA invites audiences to a special screening: the 2024 film Transindigenous Assembly will not only be shown, but also discussed and further reflected upon together with the audience. This punk documentary tells the story of queer Indigenous artists and their visions for a good life. They are queer, Indigenous cultural practitioners who act independently through their art and perform wonders with traditional medicine. The film introduces and showcases the work of activist and filmmaker Sonal Jain, who co-founded the Desire Machine Collective, Iranian musician Patrick Wielowiejeski Syriademmah, Khien Phuc, founder of the Cambodian Lotus Center, and many others. The film’s director, Joulia Strauss, is an artist and activist. She is part of the Mari people - one of Europe’s last Indigenous cultures with a shamanic tradition. Strauss lives and works in Athens and Berlin. Her sculptures, paintings, performances, and video works have been exhibited at institutions including the Pergamon Museum, the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Tate Modern, and documenta 14, among others across Europe. Following the screening, artist Joulia Strauss will engage with the audience in exploring the themes of the film. Afterwards, the QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA invites attendees to an artist talk with Strauss, moderated by Elke Krasny, Professor of Art and Education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. As a cultural theorist and curator, Krasny researches questions of care and social reproduction, social and ecological justice, transnational feminism, as well as memory work and politics of history in contemporary art, architecture, curatorial practice, and education.
